Daniel

Experiment:

If you would like your people to go deeper, I'd invite you to try something. Invite your people to call a friend to do coffee. I have in mind someone in the group, but, truthfully, it could be anyone. It could be a man and wife. Walk through the conversation and the link below the lesson. Let me know how it goes at josh@joshhunt.com. I may or may not continue these based on your feedback.

Daniel is the last author in the section of the Bible called the Major Prophets. He was deported to Babylon during the first siege of Jerusalem in 597 B.C. and, along with his three friends, chosen to be prepared for public service. Daniel and his companions were very young, but they exercised great faith. Amid the temptations and challenges of the king’s court, they held to their convictions even when threatened with death.

Daniel teaches us principles of brave faith

Daniel received most of his prophetic messages by way of visions. Some of what he saw has now already come true, which solidifies his credentials as a prophet and encourages us that his other prophecies will also come true. Furthermore, it confirms for us the fact that God is able to reveal the future to His prophets.

Daniel teaches us principles of divine prophecy

When Daniel saw that it was time for Jeremiah’s prophecy to come true—that Israel would be restored to the promised land—he humbled himself, confessed his sins and the sins of his people, and then pleaded for God to act. He knew that the Lord was not obligated to fulfill His promise when people had failed to exercise faith and obedience. He also knew that people do not deserve to receive anything from God based on their works, but that any blessings people receive from God come as a result of God’s grace, mercy, and compassion. His humble prayer serves as a model for us, though as Christians we have the added advantages of an Advocate at God’s throne and the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Daniel teaches us principles of confident yet humble prayer

Daniel not only interpreted dreams, he actually discerned a dream before it was told to him. But he acknowledged that he or anyone else could only interpret dreams through God’s power and direct revelation. Daniel was blessed with many gifts and talents, served in kings’ palaces, held high office, and was used by God mightily over a very long career. However, he did not allow any of these things to make his heart swell with pride.
